NOTICE OF FIRST PUBLIC MEETING

COMMUNITY ENTERPRISES IN BALLYLONGFORD

Would you like to develop your natural talent or flair for business?

Are you thinking of trying a new area of work?

Would you like to be able to work from the village rather than having to commute to Tralee or Limerick?

Do you think having a Community Enterprise Centre in the village would be a good thing?

Do you have ideas about where such a centre could be based and what facilities it might have?

Do you have ideas about how to bring more work to Ballylongford and make sure that new developments are viable, sustainable and successful?

Ballylongford Enterprise Association, North Kerry Together Ltd and Enterprise Ireland are carrying out a feasibility study for the development of a Community Enterprise Centre in the village of Ballylongford. We want to have your input and ideas and are holding a series of public meetings to discuss what Ballylongford needs, what a Ballylongford Community Enterprise Centre might provide and how best to take things forward.

The first meeting will be in the GAA Community Centre on Tuesday, January 14th at 8.30pm.

Please come to find out more, discuss ideas and help to shape and secure the future of community enterprises in Ballylongford.

What the study is about?

The main focus of the feasibility study is outlined in the research brief below. The promotion and support of community based enterprises is an important part of the regional development strategies of Enterprise Ireland. Previous initiatives have demonstrated the potential to impact positively at the local level and to support the creation of new businesses and employment opportunities. Find out more about community enterprises and the role they could play in Ballylongford here.

RESEARCH BRIEF

The requirement is for an in-depth study, quantitative and qualitative, to determine the enterprise developmental needs of the North Kerry area, specifically in respect of the feasibility of establishing a Community Enterprise Centre in Ballylongford village. The research brief identified three overall objectives for the research to be undertaken, namely:

  • To examine the potential for the development of an enterprise centre in Ballylongford in North Kerry
  • To establish possible thematic areas for development such as tourism etc
  • To outline both a strategy for achieving such objectives and key actions required including structural requirements in terms of the development of the building and capital requirements

Key elements of the research are to include socio-economic aspects (including demography and skills), infrastructural and building requirements (including capital requirements and centre operations), tourism, existing and planned industries, commercial and services sector, potential for the farming community and environmental constraints. These need to be set in the context of labour market trends, community needs, capital availability and social inclusion.

COMMUNITY ENTERPRISES

What is a community enterprise?

Community enterprises tend to be:

  • locally based, owned and run
  • linked to local community development
  • promoters of local products and services or providers of information, training and advice
  • small scale creators of local jobs
  • located in rural areas
  • a focus or framework around which the local community can stimulate economic and social regeneration
  • catalysts for local capacity building and skills development
Community enterprises in regional strategies

The focus of the CEC initiative administered by Enterprise Ireland in close cooperation with Shannon Development, FAS, the Local Authorities and County and City Enterprise Boards is on providing infrastructural facilities to support the establishment and expansion of micro enterprises with local community participation.

Two key aims are to foster an enterprise climate and to support small businesses in their earliest stages of development. Priority has been given to supporting initiatives in areas of particular need where the history of enterprise development to date has been poor or little existing enterprise space is to be found.

Bringing broadband to North Kerry by satellite: a new initiative being launched by the South West Regional Authority

The South West Regional Authority is launching a new programme to bring broadband to businesses and communities across the region. A satellite receiver is planned for Listowel, and villages nearby will be able to purchase or lease smaller dishes and antennae at relatively low costs to bring broadband facilities to their localities. This will help to make the North Kerry area more attractive for new companies to locate here.

Why the need for the Southwest Broadband Programme?
Due to the low population density and high installation costs, it is entirely possible that telecommunications providers will never be interested in putting in place adequate broadband capacity, by way of fibre in the ground, in many areas throughout the region. It is not considered economically viable to do so and the demand will not match the costs involved. Satellite broadband could be an answer.

Who is involved?
The South West Regional Authority made the submission to the European Space Agency (ESA) for approval of this programme and is legally responsible for its delivery, reporting and financial management. However, the philosophy of the Authority is to work through partnership, bringing together a broad range of organisations and companies who are interested in regional development.
