Outreach Children's Services Program
(Supplementary Services for Indochinese Children & Families)

Acacia Outreach Children's Services Program is funded under Supplementary Services (SUPS) Program by the Commonwealth of Australia Department of Family & Community Services Children's Services Program. The objectives of SUPS program (SUPS Program Guidelines 1996) are:

  • To increase the access and participation of children with additional needs in Commonwealth funded Children's services, and
  • To facilitate developmentally and culturally appropriate programs in these services for children with additional needs.

The aims of Acacia Outreach Program are:

  • To promote children's services to Indochinese families and community, assist Indochinese families with children equitably accessing the children's services,
  • To assist the children's service providers to meet the needs of Indochinese children and families in a cultural relevant way.

Acacia Outreach Program is not only provide services to Indochinese families whom children are enrolled at the Acacia but also at the other local children's services in Melbourne metropolitan.

With the existing ability, expertise and qualification in child care, community development and cross-cultural communication of the Acacia's outreach staff, we provide free of charge services in the following areas:

CONSULTATION

  1. Working with Vietnamese/Chinese children on the language development, on occasional or fixed session. Providing assistance for individual or group of children in needs.
  2. Bridging the cultural gap between Indochinese parents and staff (cultural aspects/ expectation, child rearing practice  etc...).
  3. Helping children's services providers develop strategies to promote the service and encouraging Indochinese families to utilise the children's services available, particularly for the new comers in the area.
  4. Providing services, training for Vietnamese/ Chinese care-givers.
  5. Taking part in seminars/workshops with the purpose to gain a mutual understanding between Indochinese community and the broader community in a multicultural context, and in a culture advocacy capacity.

BILINGUAL MATERIALS & RESOURCE

  1. Assisting in translating short notices/information for Indochinese parents.
  2. Producing paper/newsletters on various cultural issues in English for children's services providers.
  3. Providing information, booklets, relating to child care, health care and childrens services in Indochinese languages and/or in bilingual (English-Vietnamese).
