Excerpt taken from The Richmond Guardian, 1895

The application of Mr Martin Ratz to the Council for a license to carry on a marine store in Victoria-street, South Richmond, caused considerable discussion in the COuncil, and during the debate frequent reference was made ot the excellent manner in which the buildings, etc., had been arranged by the applicant in order to carry on the business in the best possible fashion. The depot - certainly one of the most complete in the colony - covers a block of land with 107 feet frontage to Victoria-street by 164 feet depth. At front and side there is a substantial brick wall about 15 feet in height, and at the rear a set of commodious brick stables and lofts are being constructed. At the other end of the yard are the washing vats for the cleaning of bottles - an important part of the business, while ranged along the sides are frames and receptacles in which thousands of bottles of various sizes, shapes and colours are stored. The place is open, airy, well-drained and ventilated, and presents a striking contrast to the ordinary marine store. The substantial residence of Mr. Ratz adjoins the yard, and if all marine stores were as commodious, clean and well-managed as this, no objection could be taken to their location.
