Excerpt taken from The Richmond Guardian, 1893

Alfred Gurr, of the "New Times Boot Warehouse", 184 and 186 Swan-street, announces that he is now offering to the public the largest parcel of boots and shoes ever given away in the history of the colony. This is a bold assertion, but the prices noted in this advertisement are considerably lower than usual, Mr Gurr believing in the principle of "small profits and quick returns". The sale will continue for one week only. A very large and superior stock of ladies' and gent's boots and shoes is displayed for selection of the public.
