Excerpt taken from The Richmond Guardian, 1895
Despite the heat of Thursday evening the members of the Scottish Thistle Club held a concert and ball in the Protestant Hall, Melbourne, in commemoration of the birth of the poet Burns. Ex-Cr. Jenkins, who is president of the society, presided; and Mr. G.H. Bennett, M.P., who is a patron, would have been present but for his parliamentary duties detainng him. Mr. McGowan, of Burnley, spoke a piece very well - a portion of "The Cottar's Saturday Night". Many Richmond people were present, and the affair passed off with eclat.
