Vision: Opening Doors to our Community
Mission: Inclusion through education, support and friendship

Key activities

Flexible and friendly ESL classes - our classes are aimed at people from all backgrounds and all levels. Classes reflect the needs and abilities of our students and our outcomes are aimed at providing English skills required for living, working and studying in Melbourne.

Social Support Group for Older People - our Over 55's group meets on Thursdays and a small team of volunteers prepare a home cooked lunch. Games such as bingo are played and mystery prizes are always on offer! This luncheon gives our participants the chance to catch up with friends and seek assistance with other matters if needed.

Computer Clubhouse - The Clubhouse is a friendly space where disadvantaged young people can develop their computer and other work-related skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. Clubhouse members - aged from 9 to 18 - gain access to high-end computers, digital cameras, video cameras and Lego robot kits, as well as the skills of volunteers with expertise in digital imaging, web design and computer programming. The Clubhouse is based on the Constructionist Learning Theory – “where students learn by doing, planning, making and constructing projects that are of interest to them.”

Refugee Support - A large part of the Fitzroy Learning Network program is the support provided for refugees, Temporary Protection Visa Holders and Asylum Seekers. They all have access to free English Classes, computer classes, a social worker and a warm, friendly and welcoming environment. Many of these students have been involved in the Play "Kan Yama Kan" and much of the work following its success.

Community Lunches & Social Functions - every Tuesday a team of volunteers and often current and past students prepare a community lunch for everyone at the Learning Network. This is an important time to practise English skills, to build on friendships and to make new friends. At the end of every teaching term, we also host an "End Of Term Party", to enable past & present students to celebrate their achievements and to catch up with friends.
