Refugees

We read a book, "On the Map", news reports, songs, web-sites and videos on the issue of refugees in Australia.

Here are some of the students' writings:

Carl (about "On the Map".) I like the paintings because they show what the people who told the stories were getting at. The paintings were dark and sad or happy and colourful.

Shane (about "On the Map".) This book shows how refugees suffer and the pain they all went through. It was very sad reading this book knowing what these people had to do to get here. They leave their family behind and will not see them any more.

Mary (about the Human Rights report on young refugees) The report wants the children to be freed from detention centres. I think the system must change. What can I do to make a difference?

Lino (about a video: "The Road to Tooleybuc") These refugees (TPV holders) are enjoying their freedom. The video gives the idea how the people are looked after so they can assimilate with the community more easily and quicker.

Allan (about a news article on releasing children from detention centres) I have mixed feelings for the children because they need their Mums but also they need to be away from the violence of the centres. The Government needs to be quicker with their visas. The children cope very well when they are let out to go to school.

Sonya (about a news article on the expense of off-shore detention centres) It costs more to keep one refugee on Manus Island (PNG) than a criminal in jail!"
